Did you know that Tokyo is one of a few megacities in the world that has its very own active volcanos and Japan’s only desert? Tokyo features a total of 11 islands that stretch up to 1000km away from Tokyo’s center and this tour takes you to one of the islands where you can immerse yourself in a Japanese island culture!
Takeshiba port → Oshima Island
Leave Takeshiba port by boat in the morning. It takes only about two hours to the first island “Oshima”. The mountain in the middle of the island is an active volcano which erupted for the last time in 1986. People sometimes call the Mt. Mihara “Gojinka”, the god of fire. Mt. Mihara is also famous for being the place where the Japanese government imprisons Godzilla in the movie, as well as being used in the novel Ring, in which the mother of Sadako predicts that Mt. Mihara would someday erupt using her psychic abilities!
With a local nature guide, we will climb on the exotic volcanic mountain and have a relaxing time in a hot spring with a great view.
Mount Mihara (三原山 Mihara-yama) is an active volcano on the Japanese isle of Izu Ōshima.
Oshima Island
Feel the beat of the volcanic mountain! Learn the traditional Japanese drum “Taiko” from locals. The beats represent the eruption of the mountain and the drumming technique was developed on this island.
Visit Japan’s only desert! If the weather is nice, let’s go to back to the mountain for night sky watching.
Oshima Island → Takeshiba port
We will drive around the island, visit photo spots and the shrine in the mystical forest. After lunch, we will walk around and do some shopping at the pier. Don’t forget to buy some interesting local souvenirs before you leave the island!
